Novena of Reparation to the Holy Face of Jesus Starts Today

Blessed Pope Pius IX described the devotion of reparation to the Holy Face of Jesus as a divine work which was destined to save modern society.

In the Carmel at Tours during the 1840s, young Sister Marie de Saint-Pierre received a series of private revelations from Our Lord about the establishment of a powerful devotion to His Holy Face.

He wished to establish this devotion on a worldwide scale with the express purpose of making reparation for the blasphemies and outrages of revolutionaries, the blasphemies of atheists, freethinkers and Masons, and for the blasphemy and profanation of Sundays and Holy Days.

Our Lord confided to Sr. Marie de Saint-Pierre: ''My Name is everywhere blasphemed; even little children blaspheme it.'' Jesus then made the good sister understand how this dreadful sin wounded His Heart more than all other crimes.

''By blasphemy, the sinner outrages Him to His Face, attacks Him openly, and pronounces on himself his own judgement and condemnation. Blasphemy is a poisoned arrow wounding His Divine Heart continually.''

To make reparation for these sins, Our Blessed Lord gave Sr. Marie de Saint-Pierre the Golden Arrow Prayer with which to ''wound Him delightfully and heal the poisonous wounds caused by sin.''

How much the contemporary world needs this devotion of reparation. One only has to take a walk down the street, enter into public places, or turn on the TV these days to encounter such blasphemy. And yes, even from little children! Some months ago, we reflected on the fact that it now seems as though the whole earth is sending up a continuous litany of blasphemies and curses throughout each day. And how many town centres, supermarkets and sports stadia are full on Sundays, whilst the cathedrals and churches become increasingly empty.

Today is the first day of the Novena to the Holy Face of Jesus. Thankfully, we have noticed that this devotion of reparation has been spreading in various places during the last few years. We would like to heartily recommend it to our readers today, and also to ask them to spread it in their own locality.

More information on praying the devotion can be found at the websites of Cenacle Catholic Books and Gifts UK; Human Life International (Ireland); and Tradition in Action. (We apologise as our blog-page will still not establish internet links).

Little St. Therese of Lisieux was devoted to the Holy Face of Jesus. If it was good enough for her, then it is good enough for us!

Jesus said to Sister Marie de Saint-Pierre: ''All those who honour My Holy Face in a spirit of reparation will thus perform the office of the pious Veronica.''

''By My Holy Face, you will obtain the conversion of many sinners. Nothing that you ask in making this offering will be refused to you. No-one can know how pleasing the sight of My Face is to My Father!''

And Sister Marie de Saint-Pierre explained: ''Our Lord has promised me that He will imprint His Divine likeness on the souls of those who honour His Holy countenance.''

This is clearly an important devotion. As HLI Ireland point out: ''It is a Heaven-revealed Remedy to the Ills of our times.''

Chancellor No More!

It is disturbing to hear that the currently-popular BBC2 period-drama-series Wolf Hall is depicting St. Thomas More as a creepy, scheming and unloving villain. The series also portrays Thomas Cromwell, in reality a cruel man who had a hand in St. Thomas' execution, as a deeply human and enlightened modern man. As well as being a serious misrepresentation of the historical record, the portrayal based on Hilary Mantel's novels, constitutes a blasphemous mockery of one of God's saints. In an age when the media so thoroughly shapes the thoughts and behaviours of so many people, such an anti-Catholic depiction also threatens to exacerbate the challenges faced by faithful Catholics today. It is itself a form of persecution.

Back in November, we wrote an article about St. Thomas More which included G.K. Chesterton's prophetic reflection on the fact that, whilst More's importance in Chesterton's day was greater than at any time since his martyrdom, it would continue to rise in the century after his lifetime. And so it has proven. In many places today, true marriage and the rights of the Catholic Church are under grave attack; St. Thomas More died defending both of these. It is no coincidence that he is being attacked once again.
saint-thomas-more-00.jpg
To counter the flagrant rewriting of any history, it is essential to return to the earliest historical sources. In this context, historian James Monti's 1997 Ignatius Press book The King's Good Servant but God's First - The Life and Writings of St. Thomas More can be very helpful.

Whilst acknowledging his unashamed sympathy for More in his introduction, Monti based his account on acknowledged facts, the earliest biographies, More's own correspondence and writings, contemporary artwork and the findings of recent Tudor scholarship. He combined these together with demonstrable interpretations of More's life, actions and works.

The image of St. Thomas More which emerged from Monti's sifting of the evidence was of a deeply religious, and good-humoured family man, whose intimate devotion to Christ, combined with his Renaissance humanism, helped him to live a creative life marked by justice and charity.

We have entitled today's article 'Chancellor No More!' in homage to both St. Thomas and the jester who lived with him. On the day that More ceased to be Chancellor, this wag merrily exclaimed, to laughter at the family breakfast table: ''Chancellor More is Chancellor no more!'' This - and the documentary evidence of More's love for his wife and family - is all a far cry from the BBC's depiction of More as a creepy misogynist who keeps a brain-damaged man imprisoned at home for his own entertainment. The historically cruel Cromwell, on the other hand, is shown as a cuddler of fluffy kittens. This is outright propaganda.

Thankfully, two of the English bishops have raised their voices to criticise this unhistorical and anti-Catholic portrayal of St. Thomas More.
20130827-113914.jpg
Bishop Mark Davies of Shrewsbury said: ''We should remember Wolf Hall is a work of fiction. It is an extraordinary and perverse achievement of Hilary Mantel and BBC Drama to make of Thomas Cromwell a flawed hero and of St. Thomas More, one of the greatest Englishmen, a scheming villain.'' His Lordship went on to note how sad it would be if Thomas Cromwell, ''surely one of the most unscrupulous figures in England's history, was to be held-up as a role model for future generations.''

Another bishop who spoke out against this false view of history was Bishop Mark O'Toole of Plymouth Diocese.
12180856583_b9ee4afb60_z.jpg
Bishop O'Toole, who has had a life-long devotion to St. Thomas More, noted: ''There is an anti-Catholic thread there, there is no doubt about it.''

He explained: ''Hilary Mantel does have this view that being a Catholic is destructive to your humanity. It is not historically accurate and it is not accurate in what the Catholic Faith has to contribute to society and to the common good as a whole.''

His Lordship also noted how the dramatization inverts the qualities of St. Thomas by trying to attribute them to Cromwell. Examples include the fact that, whilst St. Thomas More had a marvellous family life and educated his daughters in Latin and Greek - an uncommon practice at the time - the TV-series suggests that it was Cromwell's family who were educated, whilst More's character comes across as humourless, severe and unloving.

It is good to see these two bishops making a clear stand in defence of the truth. Whilst attacks on the Faith are becoming more pervasive, and therefore dangerous, they can also provide evangelistic opportunities to help people to find the truth. If you know anyone who is watching Wolf Hall, the bishops' words - and books like Monti's - may just help you to unblock the stones from someone's path.

Bishop Cosmas Shi Enxiang - Requiescat in Pace

Please say a prayer for the repose of the soul of Bishop Cosmas Shi Enxiang, who has died in captivity at the age of 94. Bishop Enxiang was a leader of the persecuted and underground Catholic Church in China. He had been held by Chinese authorities at an unknown location since his arrest on Good Friday, 2001.

Bishop Enxiang's great-niece has told UCA NEWS that her family had been unsuccessfully trying to discover his whereabouts for many years. Officials from the Baoding city government informed them at the end of last week that the bishop had died.

Catholics across China have expressed their sadness on Weibo; China's equivalent to Twitter. Many described Bishop Enxiang as a ''martyr in the Church''.

Bishop Enxiang was born in 1921 and ordained to the priesthood in 1947. He was first arrested by Communist authorities in 1954 and suffered long periods of imprisonment and work at hard labour camps between 1957 and 1980.

He was briefly released, but arrested again in 1981 whilst practicing his ministry. In 1982, following another release, he was secretly ordained as Auxiliary Bishop of Yixian. When the former bishop retired in 1995, Bishop Enxiang took over as the Ordinary.  He had been re-arrested in 1989, but international pressure secured his release during 1993.

On Good Friday 2001, Bishop Enxiang was arrested again, held without charge, and then taken into hidden captivity until his reported death last week.

Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him, and may he rest in peace. Amen.

Scottish Catholic Bishop Speaks Out Against '3-Parent Babies'

Torch of The Faith News on Wednesday 04 February 2015 - 16:29:18 | by admin

johnkeenan.jpg
Scottish Bishop John Keenan has spoken out clearly and unequivocally against the push for so-called 3-parent babies.

His Lordship was consecrated as the new Bishop of Paisley in St. Mirim's Cathedral, on the Feast of St. Joseph, last March.

Of the Commons debate and vote on '3-parent babies,' Bishop Keenan stated: 'The technique is not a treatment, it does not cure anyone or anything, rather it seeks to remove anyone affected by certain conditions from the human gene pool. Destroying those who have a particular disease and presenting it as a cure or as progress is utterly disingenuous and completely unethical.'

Whilst condemning the destruction of human embryos, Bishop Keenan pointed out that, even if no embryos were harmed, the Church would still oppose the procedure, because mitochondrial donation would sunder the natural process of fertility. (This is also one of the several ethical and theological reasons why the Church does not accept other forms of IVF).

He added: 'It is surprising that a society which increasingly favours and supports natural and 'environmentally friendly' products and services should countenance the genetic modification of human beings. How can we object when scientists genetically modify plants, but not when they do the same with people?''

Dr. Helen Watt, of the Anscombe Bioethics Centre, an institute of the Catholic Church in the UK and Ireland, has described the Commons vote for '3-parent babies' as a ''disaster''. She added: ''We can only hope that the House of Lords will take a more sceptical approach.''

House of Commons Votes for 3-Parent Babies - As MP Fiona Bruce Said: ''There will be no going back for society''

Britain continues to lead the global slide into post-Christian nihilism. MPs have voted this evening to allow so-called 3-parent babies. Even Aldous Huxley could not have envisioned a dystopia as bleak as this.

Please pray for our once-great nation. It has rejected God in preference for unjust wars, abortion, destructive embryo-experimentation, pornography, same-sex 'marriage,' and a host of other evils. Now we will even have legalized 3-parent IVF; a crime no other nation has yet attempted.

Perhaps Fiona Bruce, an Evangelical Christian and MP for Congleton, summed it up best in her Commons speech against 3-parent babies this afternoon: ''There will be no going back for society.''

This does not just impact on the UK as it is an attempt at a radical change to human nature. More than that it is a blasphemous rejection of the image of God in man. It will result in countless more human embryos being destroyed. Finally, it will open the door to further embryo experimentation, 'designer babies' and even to lesbian mothers 'creating' embryos; thus further undermining the natural order of marriage and procreation. We must repent and pray. May God forgive us.

Post-Christian Dystopia - British MPs Vote Today on 3-Parent Babies

Torch of The Faith News on Tuesday 03 February 2015 - 10:56:03 | by admin

three-parent-picture.jpg
British MPs will debate and vote today on whether to amend the Human Fertilization and Embryology Act (2008), regarding the legalization of Mitochondrial DNA Transfer.

Oocyte modification - Three-Parent IVF in popular parlance - involves the removal of damaged mitochondrial DNA from a woman's eggs, and its replacement with healthy DNA from another female donor. Those pushing for this procedure to be legalized contend that it will help to eradicate the rare incidences of mitochondrial disease in children. Let it be known and understood at this point that the procedure would not help any existing person who presently suffers from this condition. The science aims rather to produce children who would be genetically related to their birth mother, but free from inheriting this genetical condition from those who carry it.

As we understand the issue, this attempt to 'create' human embryos using the DNA from three parents is a grave affront to God, Who has created us in His image and likeness. It should be apparent, even to those who claim not to have any faith, that these developments would represent a radical alteration to human nature. The pursual of so-called 'Pro-Nuclear Transfer techniques' also involves the destruction of two human embryos for every single 'genetically-modified' embryo. As with all forms of IVF, these techniques not only destroy new life, they also commodify it; embryos are not conceived in a unitive act of procreation, but manipulated to order in a laboratory.

It should also be noted that the legalization of such processes would open the door to many other kinds of experimentation in embryology and the very real spectre of 'designer-babies'. We also note that the procedure would facilitate the social acceptance of lesbian women being allowed to develop babies with a share of both their DNA - thus further undermining the natural order of procreation in marriage.

In light of all these concerns we must pray today. MPs will begin debating the legalization in the House of Commons at 3pm this afternoon, prior to voting on the issue.

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales has made a statement against the procedure through Bishop John Sherrington, in his position as representative of the Department for Christian Responsibility and Citizenship.

Whilst it is good to see the statement raising ethical concerns and defending the right of every human embryo to life and protection, the statement restricts itself by neglecting to affirm the Divine and Natural Law. And whilst a bold-type paragraph, towards the conclusion, calls each individual MP to take responsibility for the decisions they will make today, it appears to express this in the sense of an 'informed choice' rather than one made in light of objective moral law, a developed conscience or spiritual/temporal consequences. Indeed, it thus appears to us to relativize the ethical concerns which it does make. Here is the actual bold-typed statement: 'Each MP must consider whether he or she has confidence that replacement of nuclear DNA has been shown to be effective and safe, and each must take responsibility for this decision.' It will, of course, never be safe for the embryos destroyed in such procedures. A concluding paragraph entitled 'Other important ethical issues' does point out the destruction of human embryos which would be involved. Perhaps the most problematic part of the statement is the fact that, rather than condemning the procedure outright, it weakly suggests: 'This is a very serious step which Parliament should not rush into taking.' When one considers the numbers of embryos that will be destroyed, it becomes clear that this is a remarkably andoyne line to take. For example, if MPs were to vote about destructive experiments on persons already born, would the bishops make such a middle-of-the-road suggestion?

At this point, it is perhaps worth calling to mind the fact that each bishop is Christ's representative in his own diocese. It would be much more effective if, rather than leaving it to a single bishop to represent the entire Conference, every bishop made an individual public statement as to why the procedure is wrong. This would both teach the faithful in every diocese and provide a louder voice in society. We have seen a good example of this working effectively just this week, with Bishop Mark Davies and Bishop Mark O'Toole both speaking out clearly against the misrepresentation of St. Thomas More in the TV-drama 'Wolf Hall'.

It was Pope Benedict XVI, (then as Cardinal Ratzinger), who reminded the Church in The Ratzinger Report (1985) - that, although episcopal conferences can be a good way to help individual bishops to speak out, they can, on the other hand, become so bureaucratic that they actually smother individual voices. As such, he pointed out: 'We must not forget that the episcopal conferences have no theological basis, they do not belong to the structure of the Church, as willed by Christ, that cannot be eliminated; they have only a practical, concrete function.'

Although Pope Francis has called for greater autonomy for episcopal conferences, it is to be hoped that the Church hierarchy will reflect further on these issues. Indeed, the challenges raised by such technological developments should be urgently engaged at the Rome Synod on marriage and family.

Today British MPs will vote on whether or not to legalize a procedure which, in ignoring God and the order of His creation, would represent one of the most radical alterations to human nature imaginable. It would also destroy countless human embryos, open the door to the further commodification of human-life and to lesbian parenting. To all this the Bishops of England and Wales have raised merely a restricted press-release.

Please pray today.

Candlemas Day

Torch of The Faith News on Monday 02 February 2015 - 20:56:52 | by admin

presentation.jpg
From as early as the 4th Century the Church has celebrated on this day one of the most ancient feasts of Our Lady, to commemorate her ritual Purification and the Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple. The feast has traditionally been celebrated with the blessing and procession of candles, to signify that Christ has come as the true light of the world.

''Hear Thy people, O Lord, we beseech Thee, and grant us to obtain those things interiorly by the light of Thy grace, which Thou grantest us outwardly to venerate by this annual devotion. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen'' (Collect, Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Traditional Missal).

We pray that all our readers will be so blessed as to receive the true light of the world - Jesus Christ.

Septuagesima - From the Crib to the Cross

Torch of The Faith News on Monday 02 February 2015 - 11:50:44 | by admin

septuagesima.jpg
The Parable of the Vineyard from Chapter 20 of St. Matthew's Gospel is read in the Traditional Mass for Septuagesima Sunday: This parable encourages us to practice the theological virtue of Christian Hope, by teaching us to avoid the opposite sins of despair on the one hand, and presumption on the other.

The traditional calendar provides a great variety of rich sources for spiritual nourishment and growth. The celebration of Septuagesima Sunday - marking roughly 70 days until Easter - presents us with a splendid opportunity to begin preparing for the penitential season of Lent. As Septuagesima closes the Christmas cycle, we are now journeying with Christ from the Crib to the Cross. In the Sacred Liturgy of Tradition, the purple vestments are again worn to denote penance and the Alleluia and Gloria are not said.

In order to prepare us for the solemnity of the Redemption, the Church invites us now to ponder on the fact and the malice of sin, on the need for moral effort and mortification as a response to God's grace, and above all on our need for the mercy of God.

The Traditional Liturgy yesterday thus provided an answer to all those seeking to implement notorious 'pastoral' practices, which have more to do with presumption than with conversion and genuine hope for God's mercy. For example, the Parable of the Vineyard, from Chapter 20 of St. Matthew's Gospel, teaches us that those who come to Christ at the 11th hour can still be saved and reach Heaven; this teaches us to avoid despair. On the other hand, those who come earlier must persevere in truth and love. Also, those who come later than the 11th hour are lost. These themes teach us to avoid presumption. There is a helpful teaching on the theological virtue of hope - and on the opposite sins of presumption and despair - in paragraphs CCC 2090 - 2092 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The words of the Collect for Septuagesima Sunday also gave a timeless - and timely - answer to Stephen Fry's hideously blasphemous rant against God and human suffering, which aired in Ireland on RTE at the weekend.

The Collect intones: ''Graciously hear, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the prayers of Thy people: that we, who are justly afflicted for our sins, may for the glory of Thy name, be mercifully delivered.''

In light of The Gulag Archipelago, Alexander Solzhenitsyn reflected on the fact that all, who reflect honestly on their own sufferings, can come to realise that in the end we have brought suffering on ourselves and on the world by our sins.

The difference between the Catholic Faith and all other systems of belief or thought, is that Catholics have a God Who suffers with them and transforms their sufferings for the good. The death we deserve can then be raised with Him to new life. The condition is that we repent and join our sufferings to His on the Cross. People often mockingly laugh about 'Catholic Guilt'. The truth is that, whilst all people have guilt, Catholics deal with it. They do this, in Christ, by way of the Sacraments of His Church; thus finding freedom, healing and that peace which the world cannot give.

May Our Lord Jesus Christ preserve us all in Christian Hope, helping us to avoid despair or presumption, as we toil in His vineyard from the Crib to the Cross.

Encouragement for Sea-Sick Catholics on St. Peter's Barque

christ-the-king-stained-glass.jpg
''Remember your faith; wake Christ within you'' - St. Augustine of Hippo.

First the bad news! In a sense it was not really 'news' to hear Cardinal Baldisseri state that, prior to it being published, Pope Francis had viewed and approved the October Synod's disastrous mid-term Relatio report. Though modernists hoped such to be the case, and orthodox Catholics feared it was, all involved really knew deep down that it had to be the case. Nevertheless, not wanting to make things seem worse than they might be, up to now we have spoken of the dangerous errors being furthered, through the synods of 2014-2015, as being 'Kasperian ideology'. From now on we will consider ourselves fully justified to publicly use the term which we have long thought in private: in all truth, we are dealing with a 'Bergoglian ideology'.

During this weekend, the stark reality of this has really sunk in further for us. Let us recall that the Relatio document was only a mid-term working document. It was also rejected by the bishops who stood up and stated that it did not express their views during the synodal discussions. Nevertheless, in three key areas it expressed ideological premises at odds with the constant teaching of the Magisterium. The Relatio asked whether the Church could: value homosexual orientation; allow those living in adulterous situations to receive Holy Communion; recognize so-called ''positive aspects'' of objectively sinful relationships.

We also now know officially that Pope Francis did indeed push for the problematic points to be taken forward to the 2015 Synod, even though they did not achieve the necessary 2/3 majority of votes. In relation to this, it is very troubling to note that, although a 2/3 majority was not reached, that a large majority of bishops did in fact vote in favour of developments which contradict the constant teaching of the Magisterium, and even the Divine and Natural Law.

All of this makes even clearer where Pope Francis is coming from with three of his well-publicised acts; meeting last weekend with a 'transgendered' woman and her 'partner'; marrying co-habiting couples just prior to the Synod; speaking on the telephone with a divorced woman who wanted to receive Holy Communion. In each of these cases, it was left to those involved to speak to the media and give the impression that they had been affirmed in their lifestyles; rather than cautioned about the spiritual dangers they were putting themselves in through objectively grave matter in sin, much less being helped to make a good confession. On the other hand, Pope Francis spoke harshly of a mother of a large family, sniped at those seeking 'doctrinal-security', and has not been so quick to meet with the founder of the persecuted Franciscans of the Immaculate or the traditional bishop of Paraguay.

Still, this was meant to be an encouraging article for sea-sick Catholics on the troubled Barque of St. Peter!

Firstly, remember that Papal Infallibility has limits. It means that the Holy Father is preserved from ever solemnly promulgating error from the Chair of Peter. These synodal manipulations are doing enormous damage to countless souls but they are not Ex Cathedra. Don't let them harm your own soul, faith or walk with Christ. Whilst damaging to society's reception of the Church's truth claims, such manipulations cannot actually destroy the truth in its essence. This is because of the promises of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit for His Church.

We also wanted to include a heartening reflection of St. Augustine of Hippo on the miracle of Jesus Calming the Storm. As the Church now struggles through a very dangerous spiritual storm, sea-sick readers may find it helpful to set some time aside this week to prayerfully reflect on the account of this given in Mark's Gospel 4:35 - 41.

St. Augustine - in his Sermones, 361, 7, - provides a helpful exegesis on this account:-

In many instances in the Bible, the sea symbolizes a place of evil forces that only God can control (cf. Ps. 65:7; 89:9-10;107:23-30). By His domination of the elements, exerted by the giving of the same kind of order that brought demons to heel (v.39;cf.1:25), Jesus shows Himself to have the power of God: hence the disciples' ask, in verse 41: ''Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey Him?''

The words that Jesus uses: ''Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?'' teach us a perennial truth: faith conquers fear; if we have faith in Jesus, nothing can disturb our peace: ''Christian, Christ is asleep in your boat. Wake Him up and He will calm the storm and your fears... You are afraid because you are asleep; you are tossed about on the stormy desires raised by the breath of those who tempt you to do evil because your faith is asleep. 'Your faith is asleep' means you have forgotten your faith. To wake Christ means to awaken your faith, to recall what you believe. Remember your faith; wake Christ within you. Your faith will immediately still the frightening winds and waves of those who tempt you to do evil.''

Dear readers, we hope these words will provide you with some encouragement and nourishment today. Seafarers in storms often lash themselves to a bulkhead to protect themselves from being swept overboard. Let us lash one another to Christ in prayer. Keep close to Jesus and Our Lady through worthy reception of Holy Communion, frequent Confession and good spiritual reading - rooted in Sacred Scripture, the Catechism of the Catholic Church and Lives of the Saints.

And in all things - Keep the Faith!

Filial Appeal to His Holiness Pope Francis - Please Go and Sign the On-line Petition Today!

filapp.jpg
In view of the Synod on the Family to be held in October 2015 in Rome, a group of concerned lay Catholic leaders and pro-family organisations gathered to address a filial appeal to Pope Francis asking him to reaffirm categorically the Catholic teaching that divorced and civilly remarried Catholics cannot receive Holy Communion and that homosexual unions are contrary to Divine and natural law.

The group note with anguish how the chaste and fecund family model taught by the Gospel is at risk. The family model is the only beacon capable of guiding millions of faithful bombarded by a decades-long sexual revolution and its hedonistic propaganda.

Indeed a breach has been opened in the Catholic Church with pastoral proposals that deny in practice, if not in principle, Our Lord's doctrine on chastity and the indissolubility of marriage.

In these circumstances, it is paramount that Pope Francis speak out to clarify the growing confusion amongst the faithful and to prevent the very teaching of Jesus Christ from being watered-down.

Who else can dispel the darkness looming over our children's future should that beacon no longer light their path?
