Blessed Pope Pius IX described the devotion of reparation to the Holy Face of Jesus as a divine work which was destined to save modern society.

In the Carmel at Tours during the 1840s, young Sister Marie de Saint-Pierre received a series of private revelations from Our Lord about the establishment of a powerful devotion to His Holy Face.

He wished to establish this devotion on a worldwide scale with the express purpose of making reparation for the blasphemies and outrages of revolutionaries, the blasphemies of atheists, freethinkers and Masons, and for the blasphemy and profanation of Sundays and Holy Days.

Our Lord confided to Sr. Marie de Saint-Pierre: ''My Name is everywhere blasphemed; even little children blaspheme it.'' Jesus then made the good sister understand how this dreadful sin wounded His Heart more than all other crimes.

''By blasphemy, the sinner outrages Him to His Face, attacks Him openly, and pronounces on himself his own judgement and condemnation. Blasphemy is a poisoned arrow wounding His Divine Heart continually.''

To make reparation for these sins, Our Blessed Lord gave Sr. Marie de Saint-Pierre the Golden Arrow Prayer with which to ''wound Him delightfully and heal the poisonous wounds caused by sin.''

How much the contemporary world needs this devotion of reparation. One only has to take a walk down the street, enter into public places, or turn on the TV these days to encounter such blasphemy. And yes, even from little children! Some months ago, we reflected on the fact that it now seems as though the whole earth is sending up a continuous litany of blasphemies and curses throughout each day. And how many town centres, supermarkets and sports stadia are full on Sundays, whilst the cathedrals and churches become increasingly empty.

Today is the first day of the Novena to the Holy Face of Jesus. Thankfully, we have noticed that this devotion of reparation has been spreading in various places during the last few years. We would like to heartily recommend it to our readers today, and also to ask them to spread it in their own locality.

More information on praying the devotion can be found at the websites of Cenacle Catholic Books and Gifts UK; Human Life International (Ireland); and Tradition in Action. (We apologise as our blog-page will still not establish internet links).

Little St. Therese of Lisieux was devoted to the Holy Face of Jesus. If it was good enough for her, then it is good enough for us!

Jesus said to Sister Marie de Saint-Pierre: ''All those who honour My Holy Face in a spirit of reparation will thus perform the office of the pious Veronica.''

''By My Holy Face, you will obtain the conversion of many sinners. Nothing that you ask in making this offering will be refused to you. No-one can know how pleasing the sight of My Face is to My Father!''

And Sister Marie de Saint-Pierre explained: ''Our Lord has promised me that He will imprint His Divine likeness on the souls of those who honour His Holy countenance.''

This is clearly an important devotion. As HLI Ireland point out: ''It is a Heaven-revealed Remedy to the Ills of our times.''
