John 6:53: Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you: Except you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink His Blood, you shall not have life in you.

I remember the first time I went to Ireland to visit Angeline's parents in 2001. As we settled down to watch the 6pm news one evening on RTE, I was impressed to witness the bell chimes being broadcast before the traditional minute's silence, to give viewers some space to pray the nightly Angelus prayer. Those church bells and prayerful silence had a particular resonance, given the location of Angie's family home out in the wilds of Co. Mayo.

Alas, by then the broadcast had changed from its earliest days in the early 1960s. At the beginning, the Angelus had originally been aired to the accompaniment of classical paintings of the Annunciation or other appropriate images of Our Lady.

By the time I encountered RTE's daily Angelus, the religious iconography had given way to footage of happy families, pleasant scenes from nature and beautiful sunsets.

Still, I could not have known of these changes at that time; and as I was coming from the totally secularized culture of England, I was still impressed by a major broadcaster providing a moment for the praying of the Angelus.

Of course, in the last couple of years the traditional slot has morphed further as secularism has made further inroads into Ireland's religio-cultural heritage. The latest version of the silence before the news is now described in RTE corporate-speak as being, ''conducive to prayer or reflection for people of all faiths and none''.

This is all a far cry from a talk that we heard over in Dublin back in 2003. At that time, the missionary priest Fr. Tom Cusack was reflecting on his formation in the Faith, during the years that he had grown up around the West Clare peninsula on Ireland's Atlantic seaboard.

Fr. Tom Cusack giving a presentation during a pro-life retreat we attended in Dublin during 2003. He spoke of the demise of Ireland from her Catholic civilization, through the increasing dominance of secularism. Fr. Tom reminded his hearers that, in the days of persecution from the British, Ireland's Catholics had preferred to die, rather than to abandon the One True Faith. He reminded everyone that, in the end, the power of Christ's Truth and Resurrection will prevail; in the meantime our job is to remain faithful through regular Holy Mass and Confession, devout praying of the family Rosary and continuing in fidelity to the true teachings of the Church.

Fr. Cusack recalled a devoutly Catholic local community. In those days, the Catholic Faith held the village communities together, and nourished their minds, hearts and culture. It was the norm to see women at the village water pump, and men who were working in the fields, suddenly stopping what they were doing to reverently pray the Angelus, as soon as the parish church rang its humble bell at noon.

How much things have changed in Ireland!

Of course, in the present day RTE's general programming can be, shall we say, less than edifying from a Catholic perspective... Apparently, during Dublin's Eucharistic Congress of 2012, some courageous souls actually held aloft banners protesting that ''RTE is Anti-Catholic!''

The ongoing demise of RTE was painfully demonstrated to us this weekend when we received an e-mail notification from the good people of HLI Ireland.

This drew attention to a disgraceful edition of the Late Late Show, which was sadly broadcast on the Feast of the Epiphany on RTE One.

It seems that the show's host Ryan Tubridy, laicised ex-priest Michael Harding and two other guests openly mocked the Most Holy Eucharist during the broadcast.

A transcript of the broadcast which HLI Ireland has provided demonstrates how these characters spoke very sacrilegiously of the Blessed Sacrament.

Please forgive these lines being repeated here, but we do this so that you will realize the gravity of this matter, and pray in an appropriate spirit of reparation.

Tubridy scoffingly claimed that it was ''a great expression'' to speak of the Eucharist in terms of ''haunted bread''.

Another guest suggested that it was a ''scary concept'' to speak of the Body of Christ; even suggesting this was akin to ''cannibalism''.

To the accompaniment of laughter, one guest even suggested: ''They are asking us to eat the ghost of a 2,000 year-old carpenter... It's a ghost and human flesh at the same time.''

The laicised priest Harding added: ''The medieval idea of Jesus or haunted bread cannot stand up.''

This mockery of the Real Presence of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ - Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity - in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist is downright satanic.

It shows that when people go away from the truth they fall prey to all manner of demonic suggestions and activity; becoming increasingly worse all the time. This is a perilous situation in terms of the state of their souls.

Really, it was up to the bishops and priests of Ireland to make a massive protest against this public afront to Our Lord Jesus. They ought to have organized widespread protests and reparation for it. Then, too, they should also have warned those involved, especially the former priest, of the gravity of this public sin and of the need for all involved to repent publicly if they are to avoid going to the eternal punishment of the fires of Hell.

Anyway, may God bless the good people of HLI Ireland, who have asked their supporters everywhere to please join them in making the following prayer of reparation for this evil travesty.

HLI Ireland asks: Please recite the Golden Arrow prayer below three times in reparation for this ugly mockery of Jesus in the Eucharist.

May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable, most incomprehensible and unutterable Name of God, be always praised, blessed, loved, adored and glorified in Heaven, on earth, and under the earth, by all the creatures of God, and by the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ, in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Amen.

Please pray this reparatory prayer and intercede for the conversion of those hard-hearted people who so hate Our Lord and His Holy Church.

If you access HLI Ireland via our Links Page, you will be able to take part in their Novena to the Holy Face of Jesus, which is also now underway.
