lourdes_025.jpgAs is the custom, we went along to the Crowned Virgin Statue in the Domain on the last night and asked Our Blessed Lady if she would bring us back one day to Lourdes. As I'm a bit of a softy this is always a somewhat tearful experience! The town had an 'end of term' feel due to the fact that the season was coming to an end with the completion of the Immaculate Conception celebrations. On the final evening only one shop remained open and there was no torchlight procession.

All in all, we much preferred the calm and religious atmosphere of the town at this time of year to the summer months when a nightclubby, Ibiza motif seems to prevail! All week the streets were relatively quiet and one could meet with folks for a chat along the shops without being bustled along or having to raise your voice above dire, 90's pop music!

Afterwards we retired to the hotel Ariane to pack our cases for another early start and a pre-dawn bus ride back to Carcassonne. We highly recommend the Ariane; the rooms are basic - but hey this is a pilgrimage - the food is first class; the staff remain very helpful and friendly even during the extremely busy meal times; and the hotel is not too far from the domain.
