We have a framed print of this beautiful 19th-Century painting by William Adolphe Bouguereau in our hallway at home. It seems an appropriate image to head up this article for the Feast of the Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is celebrated today in the Traditional Calendar.

In 1931, on the 15th centenary of the Council of Ephesus, Pope Pius XI ordered that a feast should be instituted to celebrate the Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In 431 AD, the Council of Ephesus had solemnly defined that the divine and human natures were united in the person of Jesus the Son of God. It follows that Mary, His Mother, may rightly be called Mother of God.

Ever since 431, this title of Mother of God has become sacred to Catholics, for it expresses a sublime dogma of the Incarnation. In this we see again that all of the honours belonging to Our Blessed Lady safeguard and uphold those of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Mary, Mother of God - Pray for us!
